A lot of women ask this question – can I eat before my yoga class?
Yes, you can. You should eat something light 1-2 hours before your yoga class. This is important so as to give you energy while exercising. It also maintains your blood sugar level.
In general, exercise is best done on a light or empty stomach. However, prenatal yoga classes can be long, typically up to 90 minutes in duration. This is because pregnant women get tired more often and need frequent breaks. Hence, it is not advised to be on an empty stomach because you may feel hungry or dizzy in those 90 minutes. Also in pregnancy, you feel hungry more often. Hence it is best not to remain on an empty stomach. Try eating a light snack.
The best time to have a prenatal yoga class is morning or evening. Avoid going for a class around afternoon because that is the time you’ll be having lunch. We know how important pregnancy diet is, and you should make it a point to follow a healthy diet plan.
Ensure you carry a water bottle with you. It’s very important to keep yourself hydrated during pregnancy. Keep drinking from the water bottle throughout your class, even more so if you are sweating.
It’s a good idea to keep a gap of 3-4 hours between your main meal and your yoga class. This is because a main meal may make you feel drowsy in the class. Thus your body will have to work harder to get its supply of energy. Also you may find it uncomfortable, to do yoga on a full stomach.
Eat easy-to-digest foods 1-2 hours before your class. Fruits work well, so try eating an apple or a banana.
If you get hungry 30-45 minutes before your class, eat some nuts such as almonds. They work great in supplying you energy required for yoga and aren’t heavy on your stomach.
Bear in mind that it is very important to keep a check on what you eat and how much you eat. As a general rule, the closer your class is, the smaller your meal or snack should be. Also you should try and avoid foods which are difficult to digest. This includes processed food, fast food, deep fried food, heavy daals, foods which are too spicy or sweet, aerated drinks.
After your class, wait for 30 minutes before eating anything. Some exercises work on your digestive system, so it’s best to give it some time to get back to its normal state. Many women say that eating a fruit after the yoga class keeps them from becoming hungry till their next meal.
At the same time, always keep your doctor or dietitian in loop about what you eat.
