Doppler ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the blood flow in the arteries and veins. It can help in detecting abnormal blood flow within a blood vessel and can diagnose conditions like a blood clot and poor circulation.
During pregnancy, Doppler scan is done in the third trimester between 30-34 weeks. It should not be performed before 24 weeks. During pregnancy, Doppler scan measures the blood flow through the umbilical cord and around different parts of the baby like heart and brain.
How is Doppler Scan performed?
It is like any other ordinary scan. The sonographer puts some gel on your tummy and moves a transducer over it. The sound waves bounce off the blood flow to your baby’s body via the cord, as well as his blood circulation system. It creates an image on the screen making the sonographer aware of the blood flow which helps in indicating how well the baby is doing.
Why do I need a Doppler Scan?
A Doppler scan is done to ensure the baby is doing well and there is proper flow to all parts of the body. It is also required in the following cases:
- if you have a very low or high BMI
- if you are carrying twins or more
- existing medical conditions like diabetes or high BP
- if your baby is not growing at a healthy rate
- if you have a history of miscarriage or your previous baby was underweight
What happens in a Doppler Scan?
The sonographer checks different areas depending upon the information that the doctor requires. These are the various types of scans:
Uterine artery Doppler scan
Uterine artery carries blood to the womb. During pregnancy, it increases in size to allow more blood to flow through it so that the placenta receives sufficient amounts of blood. The sonographer makes sure that the vessel is stretchy so that it can increase in size.
Umbilical artery Doppler scan
It looks at the blood flow to your baby through the umbilical cord and the placenta. It makes sure that the baby is getting all the required nutrients and oxygen.
Doppler scan not only helps in determining the baby’s health but also helps the doctors to decide the best date for childbirth. Having multiple Doppler scans poses no risk to the baby.
