The term diarrhea is used when 2-3 or more loose or liquid bowel movements occurs within 24 hours. One of the most discomforting experience is to have diarrhea during pregnancy. Having more than 3 bowel movement a day can dehydrate your body which can be dangerous during pregnancy.

It is common to have digestion related problems including diarrhea during pregnancy. Diarrhea during pregnancy can be caused due to various reason either due to pregnancy related changes or other medical conditions.

What caused diarrhea during pregnancy?

Some pregnancy-related changes that can cause diarrhea are hormonal changes, prenatal vitamins, dietary changes, food sensitivities, lactose intolerance, among others.

Some non-pregnancy related problems that can cause diarrhea are bacteria, virus, an intestinal parasite, stomach flu, certain medications or antibiotics and food poisoning.

There is another reason that can cause diarrhea that is an intestinal obstruction. It is a very rare condition in which the large stools block the large bowel. Sometimes the watery stools leak around it showing up as diarrhea.

If the diarrhea is caused due to food poisoning, bacteria or virus, it will clear up in two days.

What should I do if I have diarrhea?

One should go and see a doctor and the doctor will ascertain whether the medications are the cause of diarrhea. In most cases if medications are the cause, the body will adjust accordingly. But if it continues, one should not ignore it and see a doctor.

There are certain food items that make diarrhea worse.  One should avoid eating food items with high fat and fiber contents, spicy and fried, and milk, dairy products if you are lactose intolerant.

During pregnancy, pregnant women need more water when they are not having any digestive problem. In diarrhea, a lot of fluids from the body are lost during bowel movements. For pregnant ladies, it is very important to stay hydrated and they should drink plenty of water.
